CONCEALED CARRY HANDGUN TRAINING / CERTIFICATION

Now Recognized in 27+ States

"A NC Resident, with a CCH license, may now use the license in lieu of a pistol purchase permit when buying a firearm."

A full compliment of Firearm Safety, Marksmanship and Personal Defense related classes are offered by NRA and NC Justice Academy Certified Instructors.

We are very fortunate to have R. Steve Johnson as our chief CCH instructor.

A native of NC, Steve has been with the NC Department of Justice since 1972.  He has been a sworn Law enforcement officer since 1976 and continues to serve as a reserve officer at two agencies.  Steve holds certifications from the NC Education and Training Standards Commission as a Firearms Instructor, a Defensive Tactics Instructor, and a Physical Fitness Instructor;  from the National Rifle Association as a Submachine Gun Instructor and a Police Firearms Instructor.  He has attended armorer's schools conducted by Smith & Wesson, Remington, Glock, SigArms, Colt, Beretta, and Mossberg.  Steve is currently the President of the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI), a member of the Police Marksman Association, the NC Law Enforcement Officers Association, the National Rifle Association, the NC Law Enforcement Planners Association and the NC National Guard High Power Rifle Team.  As an Instructor for the NC Justice Academy, Steve is responsible for the certification training of all NC Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors, as well as, training in such topic areas as sniper training, transitional pistol training, firearms for female officers, and many in-service firearms activities for entry or tactical teams.  Steve has served as an expert witness in the areas related to use of force.

NC CONCEALED CARRY HANDGUN COURSE(12hrs)........(members)$100  (non members) $120

Comprehensive instruction in the laws governing the use of deadly force, the concealed carry statute and other relevant issues. Course also covers the handgun nomenclature and operation, ammunition, safety, shooting fundamentals, and issues regarding carry of a concealed handgun. "100 rds"

All live fire will be done at our comfortable indoor range facilities.

Note:  This class is designed for persons who have had some experience with handguns.  If you are not comfortable with a handgun at all, you should consider one of our Handgun Basics sessions prior to the CCH class.  We have basics classes scheduled weekly.

Because of limited space we require payment in full to reserve a seat in the class. 

* Cancellation policy:  You can reschedule your class anytime prior to 12 noon on the day preceding the class.  If you are going to have to reschedule we ask that you let us know a.s.a.p. so that we can reassign that seat.  Space is limited and we have to pay for each seat reserved.  If you do not reschedule you forfeit your fee.  We will allow you to apply 50% to a future class. 

Training Objectives

Demonstrate proficiency in safe handling of the handgun to include loading, unloading, storing or securing, and firing the handgun.

Identify the places that handguns may not be carried even if the individual has a Concealed Carry - Handgun permit.

Identify the major parts of the revolver or semiautomatic pistol

Demonstrate proficiency in marksmanship fundamentals

Explain the provisions under NC Common Law in which the use of deadly physical force would be justified.

CCH CLASS Itinerary, and things you need to know;

Saturday 8:00 - 5:00,  Class room instruction, Lectures, Demonstration, Video presentation, 

Held in our new ANNEX CLASSROOM adjacent to the Range at 301-A, Tryon Road. 

* Parking  Because of Limited space we have made arrangements for Class Participants to Park on the other side of Tryon Road at the Light House Convention Center on Saturday.  Handicap participants please use designated spaces at the Annex and Range (Closest).

Regular breaks and a 1 hour lunch period.    Multiple choice, true/false exam at end of day. Review

Sunday,  Live fire range practice and proficiency test.  You will be asked on Saturday to sign up for a shooting time on Sunday Morning.  Class will be split into smaller groups for range work.

The shooting/testing portion will be held at our range facility at 301 Tryon Road.

WHAT WILL YOU NEED:

Saturday, you will need your Identification (drivers license), "UNLOADED FIREARM" and pen or pencil.  If you don't have a firearm and wish to use one of our loaner firearms we will provide an inert blue training gun for Sat and one of our rental handguns for the live fire on Sunday.

Sunday, you will need your Firearm, 90-100 rounds of ammo, and pen or pencil.  We sell all popular handgun calibers.  If your gun uses an odd caliber please check with us beforehand for availability.  We suggest that you shoot your personal firearm, however we have loaners for those who need them.  We will also provide eye and ear protection for those who do not have their own.

There is a lot of critical information to cover on both days, please be courteous to your fellow classmates and arrive on time.

* PRE/POST-QUALIFICATION:  If you are competent in your firearm handling and shooting skills and you can successfully engage a target at 3, 5 and 7 yards, you can pre-qualify to skip the Sunday portion of the class.  The pre-qual test consist of 40 rounds and takes about 15 minutes.  Just let us know that you want to pre-qual when you reserve your spot in the class.  We will set up an appointment for you. Pre and Post Qualifications are done Monday thru Thursday, Please call ahead to arrange a session.

 * POSITIVELY NO AMMUNITION ALLOWED IN THE CLASS ROOM ON SATURDAY!

We will inspect your firearms at the door!

Following successful completion of the Class we will issue you a certificate that you must present to your county Sheriff's office.  The Sheriff's office will fingerprint you and run a background check on you, then upon approval they will issue your Concealed Carry License (good for 5 years).

CONCEALED WEAPONS RECIPROCITY

Since 1995, North Carolina has allowed qualifying residents of the state to obtain a permit to carry a concealed handgun from the sheriff of the applicant’s home county. The permit is valid for five years unless it is revoked.
 
SBI analysts compile county-by-county statistics on permits allowed, denied and revoked.
 
 
Permits Honored in Other States
 
The Attorney General’s Law Enforcement Liaison section is charged with analyzing the laws of other states to determine whether concealed handgun permits are honored here, and North Carolina’s permits honored there.
 
Permit holders should know that while they can legally carry a concealed handgun while visiting these states, they’re subject to that state’s laws state and are responsible for learning about those laws.  Out-of-state permit holders should familiarize themselves with North Carolina’s laws.
 
For example, in North Carolina, concealed handguns may not be carried:
bulletIn law enforcement or correctional facilities such as a prison
bulletIn any space occupied by state or federal employees, including state and federal courthouses;
bulletIn schools or on school grounds;
bulletIn areas of assemblies, parades, funerals or demonstrations;
bulletIn any place where alcoholic beverages are sold and consumed (such as some restaurants);
bulletIn any area where concealed handguns are prohibited by federal law;
bulletIn any place of business that has posted a sign banning concealed weapons on its premises;
bulletBy any person while consuming alcohol or while under the influence of alcohol or any controlled substances (unless obtained legally and taken as directed by a physician).

 

To possess a concealed handgun in North Carolina, you must:
bulletCarry your permit and a valid form of identification with you at all times.
bulletDisclose the fact that you have a valid concealed handgun permit when you are approached or addressed by any law enforcement officer in North Carolina.
bulletInform the officer that you are in possession of a concealed handgun.
bulletPresent both the permit and valid identification at the request of an officer
NOTE: You should not attempt to display either your weapon or your permit unless directed to by an officer.

Pistol Purchase Permits (WAKE COUNTY)

 

Varied Counties have slightly different procedures, Check with you local Sheriff's office for details.

To apply for a pistol purchase permit, you must:

  1. Bring a Valid North Carolina Driver's License or NC ID Card
  2. You must appear in Person (do not mail the application) at:

  1. Complete a short application

Hours of Operation: Monday - Friday 8:30 am to 5:00 pm

$5.00 per permit. We accept cash or check only.

Limit of 5 permits per application. ( No exceptions)

Permits must be picked up within Six weeks of application approval date.

Permits take seven business days to complete. You do not need to call to see if you have been approved. A letter will be sent to the address on your application if you have been denied.

Pistol Purchase Permits

You must obtain a valid pistol permit whether you receive the weapon from a commercial dealer or a private person. The requirement also applies without regard to whether it is a transaction for money or a gift.

It is a misdemeanor to sell or otherwise dispose of a handgun without first obtaining a pistol permit from the recipient of the pistol.

Requirements for a Pistol Purchase Permit

bulletMust be a resident of _______ County for a minimum of 30 days.
bulletMust have a valid NC Driver’s License or NC ID Card.
bulletResident Aliens: Must bring a resident alien card, social security card and a NC driver’s license or NC ID card.
bulletNaturalized Citizens: Must bring your Naturalization Certificate or valid US Passport.
bulletMust NOT be convicted of any felony, or similar offense in any jurisdiction or currently under indictment for any felonious offense
bulletMust NOT be a fugitive from justice
bulletMust NOT be an unlawful user of, addicted to, marijuana, and depressant, stimulant or narcotic drug
bulletMust NOT be adjudged incompetent on grounds of mental illness, nor have been committed to any mental institution
bulletMust NOT be convicted of a Domestic Violence Offense
bulletMust NOT have unresolved criminal charges pending
bulletMust NOT have a suspended driver's license
bulletMust NOT have a substantial history of convictions, arrests, or reports demonstrating a continuing pattern of criminal activity
bulletMust NOT be discharged from the Armed Forces under dishonorable conditions
bulletMust NOT be an illegal alien or unlawfully residing in the United States
bulletMust NOT have been a citizen of the United States and renounced that citizenship
bulletMust NOT have an active court order of protection (50B) that alleges any domestic threat or violence
